What is the Child Development Advisory Service? This service is intended for pre-school children with learning difficulties or developmental delay. Children are usually referred by paediatricians or via the Child Development Team. A Child Development Advisor visits the child’s home regularly and plans activities for the child and parents to work on together. These plans cover a number of areas of development, e.g. self-help, language, play, motor and social skills. Who is it for? The service is intended for pre-school children with learning difficulties or developmental delay. Children are usually referred by paediatricians or via the Child Development teams in each borough. What does the child’s family have to do? The child’s parents meet regularly with the Advisor at home, for about one hour. At the beginning, the child’s skills are observed and assessed. Based upon this, a set of plans are agreed which will help stimulate development of these skills. The Advisor demonstrates the activity during the home visit in order for the family can continue the teaching throughout the coming period. At the next home visit, the child’s parents and Advisor discuss the progress shown on the charts and plan the next tasks. If needed, toys and/or special equipment can be loaned to the family from the service’s resource library. Page designed for display at 800*600 pixels or higher Page last updated 27/10/2011.
